Profile Information

The BBG support circumvention, anonymity and privacy tools to give audiences unfettered access to news and information.

The BBG’s mission is to promote freedom and democracy worldwide.  It does so by enhancing understanding among worldwide audiences through multimedia communication of accurate, objective and balanced news and information.  Given that the board is an instrument of U.S. foreign policy, it holds as a key priority the fostering of healthy, democratic societies through the dissemination of high value multimedia content.  BBG products are routinely censored or filtered by authoritarian and repressive regimes.  Thus, circumvention technologies are paramount. They assure individuals in denied jurisdictions access to BBG media properties, as well as other web information.

The BBG's Internet Anti-Censorship Program tackles information denial in cyberspace by contracting with leading developers of circumvention tools.  Each solution provides secure and anonymous public access to BBG sites, and nearly unfettered entree to the World Wide Web.  Allowing this kind of access to news and social media sites furthers the USG’s goals of helping citizens around the world make informed decisions.  The BBG tools have become extremely popular with audiences in China, Iran, and Vietnam.
